Description
CONTEMFood is a 3-year research project coordinated by the Department of Digital Food Science at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, and funded by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office of Hungary.
The project began on 1 January 2025 in collaboration with the Swedish Food Agency (SFA), Lusófona University – CBIOS Research Center for Biosciences and Health Technologies (UL-CBIOS), and the Portuguese Economic and Food Safety Authority (ASAE).
The project focuses on process contaminants such as acrylamide, PAHs and metals in meat replacement products produced from ingredients including wheat, peas, beans, soy, mycoprotein, and insects.
The results will support country-specific risk assessments and provide insight into potential health risks associated with the consumption of meat substitutes, contributing to evidence-based food safety policies. Through this research, the project helps fill critical knowledge gaps and contributes to improving the safety of modern food products, ultimately protecting consumer health amid evolving dietary trends and environmental challenges.
With the growing popularity of plant-based and alternative protein products, it is crucial to establish comprehensive safety profiles for these emerging food categories. Our research addresses this contemporary food safety challenge by providing evidence-based insights that support the development of sustainable and safe food systems.
