Fellowship for a Bachelor - Computational Chemistry/Biochemistry

A tender is open for the attribution of one (1) Research Scholarship for a Bachelor, with COFAC internal funding, under the project with the reference FAZER+/ILIND/CBIOS/1/2025, one of the awarded projects of the Excellence in Research Competition, within the scope of Fazer+. The conditions are the following:

Scientific Area: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biology, Nutrition and related areas.

Admission requirements:

Candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements:

  1. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biology, Nutrition, and related fields, and enrollment in a course that may or may not lead to an academic degree;
  2. Written and oral proficiency of the English language;
  3. Good knowledge of computational chemistry/biochemistry, with preference given to previous research experience in projects in this area.
  4. Experience with molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and in vitro screening of compounds are preferred factors in the selection process;
  5. Ability to use molecular modeling/simulation and chemoinformatics software;
  6. Publications or conference presentations are preferred.

Work Plan:

  1. Model construction and interfaces characterization: The investigator will produce a complete and refined structure for the BmrA transporter and will characterize the TMD/NBD1 and TMD/NBD2 BmrA interfaces, resulting from molecular dynamic runs.
  2. Discovery of new active molecules: the researcher will discover new specific ligands for BmrA through molecular docking, pharmacophore or other chemoinformatics strategies applied in the virtual screening of libraries of commercially available compounds.

Applicable legislation and regulations: COFAC internal Regulation for Research Fellowships (Service Order number 98/2025).

Workplace: The work will be carried out at the facilities of the “Center for Research in Biosciences and Health Technologies" (CBIOS), Lusófona University, under the scientific guidance of Doutor Daniel José Viegas Antunes dos Santos (Project Coordinator).

 Duration: The scholarship has an initial duration of 12 months, starting on November 1st, 2025.

Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The scholarship amount corresponds to € 1040,98. The base amount is increased by voluntary social security corresponding to the first tier, if the candidate chooses this option, as well as personal accident insurance. The scholarship payment will be executed monthly by bank transfer.

The performance of duties as a scholarship holder is carried out in accordance with the COFAC internal Regulation for Research Fellow Statute (Service Order number 97/2025).

Selection methods:

The selection of candidates will be performed by a panel consisting of Dr. Daniel dos Santos (Project Coordinator), Professor Dr. Patrícia Rijo, and Dr. Márcia Almeida Ribeiro (CBIOS Science Manager). The panel decision will be based on a curriculum evaluation, possibly supplemented by an interview. The curriculum evaluation will be worth 75% of the final grade, and the interview, 25%. If the panel chooses not to interview candidates, the curriculum evaluation will account for 100% of the candidate's score.

Form of advertising/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be published through an ordered list, posted in a visible and public place at Lusófona University.

After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the proposed decision.

The successful candidate will be notified via email.

Deadline: The call is open from October 13th to October 24th of 2025.

Documentation to be provided when applying: Applications must be formalized, obligatorily, by sending the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Degree Certificate;
  • Other documents (e.g., training certificates) found relevant;
  • Document proof of inscription in a course (leading or not to an academic degree).

Applications should be sent by email to secretaria.cbios@ulusofona.pt, and daniel.dos.santos@ulusofona.pt (in CC) with subject: RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP_CBIOS 2025_3.
